Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) revealed the advanced version of its KF-21 fighter, now called KF-21EX, which will feature internal weapons compartments to enhance its stealth capabilities.

This modification will allow the aircraft to penetrate modern air defenses and strike fortified targets, such as bunkers, without relying on external payloads—an improvement over the current model, the KF-21 Block 1, which carries weapons on its wings. Despite the upgrades, the jet will not reach the same level of stealth as the F-35, but it will gain enhanced sensors, such as an electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) similar to the U.S. fighter, as well as improvements in electronic warfare and airframe design.

The KF-21EX is designed to counter threats like North Korea’s air defenses, which have recently received advanced Russian systems. It will be capable of carrying 900 kg guided bombs (like the GBU-31 JDAM) and long-range air-to-air missiles, such as the Meteor. KAI also plans to integrate the aircraft with stealth combat drones, like the LOWUS, for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD/DEAD) missions. However, since these drones cannot carry heavy weaponry, the KF-21EX’s internal weapons compartment becomes critical for high-risk missions.

South Korea plans to produce 120 units of the KF-21 by 2032, but has not confirmed whether the EX version will be acquired beyond these units or if it will replace part of the current fleet. In addition to domestic use, the fighter could become an attractive export product, following the success of the FA-50 combat trainer.

With this evolution, the country consolidates its strategy of developing modern fighters without being entirely dependent on foreign technologies, balancing stealth, firepower, and industrial autonomy.
